Faculty Reserve Guide

Books and Media

Books and media (videos, sound recordings, etc.) from the Mercyhurst Libraries' collections or from an instructor's private collection may be placed on reserve. If the item is held by the library, faculty members should NOT check the item out in their name before requesting it be put on reserve. Reference materials or materials belonging to other libraries may NOT be placed on reserve.

If the item to be placed on reserve is not a library holding, it will be necessary to barcode the item and identify it so it is accessible to students. There is a space on the Reserve Materials Processing Form where faculty are asked to sign giving their consent for this. If the item you are submitting is rare, in fragile condition, or in any way requiring special treatment/handling, please be sure to note this as well.

Articles

Photocopied journal articles can also be placed on reserve. For each copy submitted, please include a full bibliographic citation (Author, Article Title, Journal/Book, Volume & Issue, Year, and Pages) on the first page. This ensures compliance with U.S. Copyright Law.

Electronic Reserves

Electronic reserves allow students to access reading assignments at any time from any computer, and will eliminate the need to place multiple paper copies on reserve. Articles are scanned and linked to course records as .pdf files, and students can read them online or print them.

Documents are placed on Electronic Reserve on a first-come, first-served basis. Please allow sufficient lead time for processing, particularly at the beginning of the term when our work load is heaviest. You can help us reduce file sizes as well as processing time by adhering to the following format requirements:

  • Clean copies of material in the best obtainable condition.
  • 8 1/2 x 11 paper with at least 1/2 margin on all 4 sides.
  • Single-sided copy only.
  • No holes.
  • No staples.
  • All text on copy.
  • All pages with the same orientation, i.e. portrait or landscape.
  • Author & title clearly marked; professor, course & full citation written on first page.
  • Please try not to exceed 20 pages - larger documents may be broken up into smaller ones.

Access to electronic reserve materials is removed at the end of each term. Please notify us if you wish to use the same material for a later term.

NEW! Some of our full-text databases allow us to create persistent links to an article that is available online. This often provides a cleaner, more readable copy than a scanned article. If one of your course readings is available via one of our databases, please inquire at the Circulation Desk about the possibility of adding a link to it from you library reserve listing.
